Red Fort
Red Fort can easily be considered as the best specimen
of Mughal Palace Architecture. This grand fort was built not under
one king but under many kings spanning a couple of centuries.
Red Fort bears distinct style of the different periods and different
artisans who worked to make it what it is today. Made of red sandstone,
the fort truly inspires awe and admiration because of the epic proportion
in which it was constructed. The fort was christened Red Fort because of
its color.
The
Red Fort had two separate utilities. A portion of the fort was used
for residential purpose while the other portion was used for defence.
The outer wall of the fort has two gates namely the Amar Singh gate
and the Delhi Gate. Both the gates are made of red sandstone and
have twin towers on the flanks. To foil invasion attempts, there
are a number of right angular turns before anyone can reach the
gate.
Built during the time of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan,
the fort symbolize a luxurious elegance that you will surely find
in no other building in the world. The fort is indicative of the
splendor of the Mughal royalty when the empire was at its zenith.
This historic fort retells the story of medieval India through its
architectural beauty and infinite variety.
