Khajuraho Temple
If you are a connoisseur of art, there can be very
little argument on the choice of a place where you must go to see
some of the finest specimen of sculpture. At Khajuraho you will
find rock-cut sculpture at its very best. This is arguably the most celebrated
manifestation of Indian temple architecture.
These groups of temples
are situated a hundred miles south-east of the town of Jhansi in
the state of Madhya Pradesh. Numbering over thirty, these temples
were built in a period stretching over hundred years. Time has not
been able to wear down this bewitchingly beautiful temples.
Built
during the reign of the Chandelas, the temples display undeniable
Shavite sensibility. Influence of Jainism and Tantrism can also
be seen. Although none of the temples are massive or gigantic, the
structures are extremely well proportioned and imposing. Khajuraho
is famous throughout the world for the sculpture on the walls of
the temples. Unlike sculptures on other temples. here you will find
images of maidens in provocative postures. The total number of figures
in one temple alone is over six hundred and fifty in number.
The sensuality and warmth of Indian art is displayed
in the temple sculptures in Khajuraho. The aesthetic appeal of this
beautiful temples draws visitors from near and far.
The history
of ancient India seems to come alive in the wonderful figures carved
on these temples. It is with these temples in the background that
some of the greatest exponents of Indian classical dances have performed
before admiring audiences.
