Baisakhi Festival in India

The Hindu calendar has a number of festival and among these, the new year is of special significance. Regional influences have been so strong that different region celebrate the new year on separate dates. While in West Bengal the new year is celebrated in April as Poila Baisakh, in Kerala it is celebrated as Vishu also in the middle of April. In Maharashtra people usher the new year as Gudi Padwa while the Assamese celebrate it with Bihu festival.

The most spectacular celebration of the new year takes place in Punjab. The festival is called Baisakhi because it is celebrated in the month of Baisakh, the first month of the Hindu new year. After the end of winter, the farm fields are full of corns ripe for harvest. The bountiful harvest and the prosperity that comes with it ensures that people especially farmers sing and dance with the trademark Punjabi gusto. The celebration is that of pure joy and an anticipation for the year to come.

This is the perfect time to visit the northern Indian state of Punjab. People in this part of the country take this occasion pretty seriously and there is lot of excitement pertaining to the celebration. Tourists must visit cities like Chandigarh and Amritsar to catch the pulse of the people of these places. Golden Temple, situated in Amritsar is another attraction that you should not miss. Since the state of Punjab is situated close to the city of New Delhi, communication is never a problem. Accommodation too is easy as a breeze as there are plenty of hotels available.

Baisakhi celebrates vitality, life and prosperity. Celebrates victory over adversity. Tourists who visit Punjab in the months of March and April will have the opportunity to see celebration from close quarter.
