Baisakhi Festival in India
The Hindu calendar has a number of festival and among these, the new year is of special significance. Regional influences have been so strong that different region celebrate the new year on separate dates. While in West Bengal the new year is celebrated in April as Poila Baisakh, in Kerala it is celebrated as Vishu also in the middle of April. In Maharashtra people usher the new year as Gudi Padwa while the Assamese celebrate it with Bihu festival.
The most spectacular celebration of the new year takes place in Punjab. The festival is called Baisakhi because it is celebrated in the month of Baisakh, the first month of the Hindu new year. After the end of winter, the farm fields are full of corns ripe for harvest. The bountiful harvest and the prosperity that comes with it ensures that people especially farmers sing and dance with the trademark Punjabi gusto. The celebration is that of pure joy and an anticipation for the year to come.
